Since most of the time spent in the bedroom is spent in or on the bed, it
should be treated as the room design's starting point. Of course we sleep in
them, but we also read, lounge, exercise, work and pamper ourselves there,
away from the main bustle of the house. If you are designing a bedroom for
yourself, its ambience should reflect your taste and suit your habits. If you
are setting up a guest room, it should be welcoming, but not so full of personality
that it overwhelms
The master bedroom often provides an opportunity for a splurge of luxury,
while guest rooms must be flexible and more neutral.
Whatever the source of inspiration, the bed is the focal point and most dominant
element of a room. It is the ideal canvas for creative exploration and the
expression of changing moods, likes, and desires. The joy of linens lies in
the endless possibilities they offer for transformation without great expense
or effort. The colours you choose for your linens will create emotions and
moods:
Naturals such as ivory, beige, and mocha – evoke an
environmental feel. The simplicity of earthy tones creates a soothing balm
for the senses. Naturals are comfortable to live with and blend well with almost
any other colour or decor.
White is a powerful colour scheme in itself. Used alone,
it is unerringly tasteful. Combined with any other colour in cushions, upholstery
or curtains provides the maximum flexibility. It is adaptable to both masculine
and feminine taste.
Contrasting colours such as orange, blue, red, green or
purple gives a more intense experience. Whether you use these colours in flowers,
vases, chairs or cushions, combined with neutrals give a stunning effect.
Some ideas to help you create the look:
- The flat sheet is an important element in the overall presentation. By
folding the top sheet down over the duvet (and not tucking it in), the full
complement of sheets, duvets and pillowcases show to their maximum advantage.
- The duvet can also be draped at the foot of the bed or rolled and secured
with a silk cord and tassel for a decorative effect
- A neutral coloured valance/bedskirt is the most flexible addition to your
bed and can form the basis for any bedding ensemble.
- The fitted sheet need not match the flat sheet. It can pick up another
complimentary colour if you wish
- A cascade of pillows gives your bed a look of luxurious opulence. The
taller square pillows with shams should be placed at the back, with standard
pillows cascading forwards. You can stack pillows of the same size together,
to provide a neater look
We hope you find these hints helpful when creating your dream bed, and will
continue to enjoy your linens for many years to come. |
